I am currently developing active learning modules that will be implemented in the introductory biology course at UCSC. The course is expected to be taught for the first time in the Winter 2016 quarter. At which point my focus will shift to developing active learning module for the introductory chemistry series. The active learning chemistry courses will be taught during the 2016-2017 academic year. I will also be assessing the learning outcomes of the students in both the active learning and tradition classrooms, targeting achievement in upper-division science courses, as well as their persistence in STEM. The overall project is part of an HHMI grant to improve undergraduate education through the introduction of scientifically validated instruction techniques.
